Mementos are special objects found during memory traversal in To the Moon and Finding Paradise. Each memento is an object which exists in two or more memories, thereby connecting them. It acts as a teleporter that can be used by Memory Editor operators to jump from memory to memory, and it also allows the transfer of wish.
Usually, mementos are protected by a barrier and they cannot be used before the barrier is broken. Breaking the barrier requires the player to explore the current memory to obtain Memory Orbs. Up to five orbs are required to break the barrier.
After the barrier is broken, the memento must be "prepared". Memento preparation is represented in the series as a puzzle game.
- In To the Moon, the puzzle is a tile-inverting puzzle, where the player must get all the tiles to face the right direction, but in each move they may only flip all the tiles in a row, column or diagonal. There is an optional goal for the player to complete each puzzle using the least moves possible.
- In Finding Paradise, the puzzle is a sliding match 3. By matching the right memento, the gauge above the puzzle will fill up, and the puzzle is complete when the gauge is maxed.
When the memento is prepared, the player may then interact with it to proceed to the next memory.
